This week in art class, we learned about the famous Korean artist Kim Whanki.
The students explored how he used soft colours, dots, and lines to express the feelings of the sky, the moon, stars, and nature in his paintings.
We focused on one of his most well-known works—the Moon Jar.
The children observed how Kim Whanki’s Moon Jar paintings feel calm, peaceful, and full of emotion. They were encouraged to look closely and reflect on what they saw.
Together, we discussed thoughtful questions such as:
• “How does this jar make you feel?”
• “What kind of emotions do the background colours and dots express?”
• “Do you think this painting shows daytime or nighttime?”
The students really enjoyed viewing Kim Whanki’s artwork and sharing their own interpretations.
It was a wonderful opportunity to build observation skills and connect emotions to visual expression.
Each student selected one of Kim Whanki’s masterpieces, explained why it spoke to them, and began drawing their own version inspired by his style.
