Egyptian hieroglyphs are an ancient and fascinating form of pictorial writing. These symbols were often carved into stone or walls and have remarkably survived to this day. This week, we explored hieroglyphs by transforming letters or words we wanted to express into this ancient script. We designed our names or a word we liked as hieroglyphs and then crafted each symbol out of clay, capturing the essence of ancient Egyptian art in our creations.

This week, we learned how to create beautiful artwork using transparent ink! Transparent ink looks just like water, so when we drew on Korean rice paper, the patterns were barely visible at first. After drawing the pictures we wanted, we carefully let the ink dry for 5 to 10 minutes. Once the drawings were dry, we painted on the back of the paper with watercolours, and the patterns appeared clearly and beautifully! This activity taught us the importance of patience and how to work carefully with new materials.

Our FS1-2 friends had an exciting time creating dinosaurs using shapes! Before starting their dinosaur creations, we learned about different shapes and sang a fun shape song together. To make it even more engaging, we played a shape-finding game where the kids had to find and point to the correct shape when I shouted it out. They did very well at identifying the shapes and had so much fun during the activity. Afterward, they used the shapes they learned to design and create their own unique dinosaurs. It was a wonderful way to combine learning and creativity!

We have been learning about travel and transportation in the sky. The Year 1-2 students folded paper airplanes and decorated them with their own unique designs. We also watched a video about hot air balloons, discussing how they fly and imagining the shapes and patterns we would use if we could design one. The children also thought about who they would want to take on a hot air balloon ride with them. Afterward, they sketched their ideas. Next time, we will use dyeing techniques to create patterns on the hot air balloon designs, adding vibrant and creative touches to their Y1-2 Art Class Update T1-W13

We completed our “Three Musicians” project, and the kids created wonderful artwork inspired by Picasso. I am so proud of their efforts and creativity! This week, we started working on an instrument poster. We began by discussing the instruments we know and how different artists represent them. The kids then drew their posters, focusing on improving their observational drawing skills. They really enjoyed the activity, even though some of them needed a little help along the way.

This week, we continued working on our pyramid project. We added an entrance gate and explored photos of real mummy cases, learning about their placement inside the pyramid. We also discovered fascinating Egyptian ornament patterns on the mummy cases and used them as inspiration to create our own designs. It was a fun and engaging way to dive deeper into the art and culture of Ancient Egypt!

This week, we had our exciting ‘Action Painting’ activity! I set up coverings on the floor and desks to allow the children to paint freely, and a big thank you to Mr. Choi for helping me with the setup! I provided a variety of paper sizes and types, letting the kids choose what they wanted to experiment with. It was so much fun creating abstract action paintings using a variety of colours and expressive, free movements. The kids truly enjoyed the creative process!

FS1-2 kids completed their bird project. We assembled all the painted parts of the bird’s body together. Additionally, we made a dinosaur! The kids added spikes to a dinosaur drawing that I created, and they coloured it and added patterns. We also practiced folding paper for some parts of the dinosaur’s body, which wasn’t easy, but we gave it our best. We continue practicing our cutting skills, as well as how to hold pencils and brushes properly.

We are spending a few weeks exploring instruments as a theme in art, discovering how artists express musical instruments in unique and interesting styles. This week, we continued our exploration by building on our first lesson, where we observed Pablo Picasso’s famous painting <Three Musicians>. The kids focused on the instruments, colours, and shapes in the artwork, discussing how Picasso used vibrant hues and geometric forms to convey the musical theme. With these ideas in mind, they created their own version of Three Musicians using a collage technique, layering and shapes in the style of Picasso’s playful and expressive approach.
