This week, we had a fun and creative time designing traditional Korean gomusin (rubber shoes) made out of paper. As part of our exploration of traditional Korean art, this lesson was designed to help students better understand and appreciate the culture of our host country, Korea.

We began by talking about what gomusin are and when people used to wear them.

Then, the students got to work decorating their own paper gomusin, using beautiful patterns made with traditional Korean paper, hanji. It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to connect with Korean heritage through art.

The year5-6 students began exploring and expressing traditional Korean art through collage techniques using hanji (traditional Korean paper). They learned about five symbolic plants often found in Korean art — plum blossom (maehwa), orchid (nan), chrysanthemum (gukhwa), bamboo (juk), and lotus (yeonkkot) — and began creating artworks inspired by these elements.

The Year 5–6 students worked in groups to design beautiful plum blossom pieces. They stayed focused and thoughtfully created unique flower patterns in their own styles. To form the tree trunks, they carefully tore pieces of hanji, which added a natural and textured look to their work.

I’m so excited to see how their pieces come together next week when the artworks are completed!

This week, Yeseo completed The Very Hungry Caterpillar storyboard art project.

She illustrated the caterpillar’s journey from an egg to a butterfly, focusing on story sequencing.

Using drawings and various materials, she brought each scene to life.

Yeseo put great effort into shaping and colouring foil to create beautiful, shiny butterfly wings.

She did an amazing job, and her finished storyboards look fantastic. Her work will be proudly displayed in our art show!

This week, we had a wonderful and creative art lesson where we mixed drawing, music, and video-making to bring Twinkle Twinkle Little Star to life!

First, the kids designed and decorated their own stars. They had the freedom to make their stars unique and beautiful using different colours, patterns, and decorations. Some stars were big, some were small, and beautiful bright colours.

Next, we got the stars ready for a special music video. The kids learned how their artwork could be used in an animated scene.

After that, we practiced singing the song and acting out fun movements to show how stars shine and sparkle. This helped us see how art, music, and movement can all work together to make something special.

Now, I will put everything together to create our magical music video. The kids are super excited to see how their drawings and performances will come to life on screen!

Through this project, we learned how to be creative in different ways, how teamwork is important, and how art can be used to tell a story. It was a fun and exciting experience, and we can’t wait to watch the finished video soon!

This week, one of the Year 1-2 art classes was missed due to a field trip, and three kids were absent with colds, so it felt like a bit of a short week. I hope everyone has a wonderful Easter holiday, and let’s have even more fun in our art lessons when we come back!

This week, we explored contour drawing in a fun and creative way.

The students paired up with a partner and carefully observed each other’s faces before drawing.

The challenge was to keep their pencils moving without lifting them from the paper while focusing only on what they saw, not on the paper.

It was a completely new experience for many, and the results were both exciting and amusing.

The art room was filled with laughter as the children discovered the unexpected and unique lines in their drawings. They truly enjoyed the process, embracing the imperfections and creative surprises along the way.

Through this activity, the students learned how to observe closely, trust their eyes, and let go of the pressure to make everything perfect. It was a wonderful exercise in hand-eye coordination, patience, and creative expression.

The joy and enthusiasm continued until the very end of the lesson, making it a truly memorable experience for everyone.

This week, we had a fun art lesson about printmaking.

The students made fish prints using string, foil, and paint.

First, they drew a fish on a foam board with a marker. Then, they stuck string on the lines and covered it with foil. They painted the foil with a sponge and added another colour on the string. After that, they pressed paper on top to make the print. Everyone was excited to see their fish prints appear on the paper! We learned about texture, colour contrast, and how prints are made.

The classroom got messy with paint, but the kids had a fantastic time!

This week, we continued our exploration of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by expanding our storytelling through art. Building on last week’s creative work, Yeseo used her beautiful illustrations to visually narrate the caterpillar’s journey.

She arranged her artwork in sequence, recreating the story with her own artistic touch. Through this process, she not only reinforced her understanding of storytelling but also experimented with composition and visual flow. By carefully placing her painted caterpillar and food illustrations in order, she brought the story to life in a way that was both engaging and uniquely her own.

This activity allowed her to deepen her connection with the book, practice visual storytelling, and further explore the expressive possibilities of colour and form. It was wonderful to see her creativity shine as she completed her project!

This week in our art lesson, we explored how we communicate and express emotions through art. We started by discussing different ways people used to communicate in the past, such as letters and telegrams, and compared them to how we communicate today using mobile phones, social media, and emojis.

To bring this concept to life, students created their own emoji faces to represent different feelings like happiness, sadness, excitement, and surprise. They thought about how colours, shapes, and facial expressions can help show emotions and shared their emoji creations with their classmates.

Through this activity, students learned how art can be used to express emotions and communicate ideas visually. It was a fun and engaging lesson, and we are proud of their creativity!

The Y3-4 students closely observed Egon Schiele’s self-portraits and explored his bold and expressive lines. They practiced sketching in a way that captured the distinct characteristics of Schiele’s work, focusing on strong, deliberate strokes and expressive colour application. Each student showcased their unique perspective and artistic style, producing incredibly distinctive and impressive drawings.

Additionally, we introduced contour drawing. The students learned what contour drawing is and applied the technique by sketching various objects and figures using continuous, flowing lines. It was a fantastic exercise in observation and hand-eye coordination.
