This week in English, we kicked off our novel study unit with Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick. We began reading together in class, and students are now responsible for reading 1–2 chapters each night. Alongside their reading, they are keeping a reading journal, which includes guiding and interpretive questions, vocabulary study, and reflections to deepen their understanding of the text. In class, we explored plot structure, breaking down the exposition, rising action, and character motivations to understand how the story is developing. We also examined characterization, discussing how the author reveals personality, relationships, and internal struggles through dialogue, actions, and descriptions.
In Learning Design and Technology, we explored design thinking and how it helps us create solutions to problems in a human-centered way. Students enjoyed interviewing each other about their school cafeteria experiences, defining key issues, and brainstorming creative solutions. Now, they are applying their ideas by developing 3D-rendered prototypes to test and refine their designs based on feedback.
In IMYC Social Studies, we continued our unit on entrepreneurship, examining the characteristics, duties, and responsibilities needed for success. Students conducted mini-research on various entrepreneurs, demonstrating that success comes in many different forms. We also explored bias and stereotypes, identifying implicit bias and their effects on decision-making and behavior. Students evaluated strategies to address biases and discussed how stereotypes can impact well-being and a sense of belonging.
