Mrs. Sim – Weekly Update Term 1 Week 11

Dear Parents,

I hope you have all had a nice week. We have had a great week in Year 1/2 with lots of special moments.

The highlight of our week was meeting our destination on our Positive Pathway (our class’s Behaviour Support Programme). It was a long journey with a lot of obstacles along the way but we finally did it! Yay! The destination was “To be kind and respectful” focusing on…

I can see so much kindness in our classroom and it makes my heart happy! Well done!

In Maths this week, the Year 1 students sat their end of unit assessment for “Addition and Subtraction” and I am pleased to let you know that they all did wonderfully. We had a review day beforehand and sat the assessment on Thursday. I sent home their assessments in their bags yesterday. Give them a big hug for all their hard work. 🤗

Today, we started our new unit “Shapes” and had fun exploring 3D shapes, making trains and counting.

This weeks’ objectives were:

2.16 – Subtraction on a number line

2.17 – Add or subtract 1 or 2

Review for Assessment

Assessment

3.1 – Recognise and name 3-D shapes

Year 2 students are still working on their Addition and Subtraction Unit. There have been some more challenging objectives this week involving using different strategies and I will be reviewing some of the objectives next week. Whiterose Maths equips students with various ways of working out addition and subtraction so that the children can discover which way works best for them. The Year 1 and Year 2 curriculum especially, focuses on using manipulitives to support the children in visualising what they are doing. It is important  that students work on these strategies even if they can work out the sum mentally. This provides them with foundational skills in maths that will help them as they move up the school.

Year 2 Objectives:

2.9 – Add across a 10

Review Add across 10

2.10 – Subtract across 10

2.11 – Subtract from a 10

2.12 – Subtract a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number (across a 10)

In Literacy this week, we have been writing about the Tower of London, London Eye and The Tower Bridge. The students are slowly becoming more independant writers and have mostly mastered writing sentences with correct punctuation. The Year 2 students have focused on using ‘but’ to contrast and using adverbs in their writing. Year 1 students have practised using ‘and’ to connect adjectives. “The tower is tall and beautiful”. We are making progress each week in our writing and it is lovely to watch the students grow.

We had so much fun in IPC this week! We started our new unit ‘Time Travellers’ and began with an exciting entry point. The students realised that someone had been in their classroom over the weekend! We searched for clues that were around the school to see if we could find out who had messed up our classroom! The students were fantastic detectives and used the evidence to discover it was Ms.Temple that had messed up our tables and left belongings in our class. Hehe!

Thank you all for the beautiful pictures that you all sent in for our lesson. The children absolutely loved telling thier friends all about where they had been. It was such an engaging lesson and we learned that pictures can give us so much information.

Next week Monday 11th November

On Monday in IPC we will be looking at personal belongings and I have asked the children to bring in 2 things that mean a lot to them. It could be a small toy, a bracelet, a picture, a drawing. Anything that they love and is special to them. Please send these in your child’s bag on Monday 🙂

Field Trip Tuesday 12th November

On Tuesday, 12th November we have our field trip to Seonam Lake Park. At the Rainbow Park, we will have fun trampolining, making sand castles and climbing.

What do I need to bring?

• An easy to eat snack

• A lunch that doesn’t need to be microwaved

• Comfortable shoes

• Comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting a little sandy/dirty

• A jacket (it is supposed to be 21 degrees but we don’t want to feel cold)

• A happy smile 🙂

Christmas Show 13th December

Christmas is soon approaching and we have started to look at which dance we will perform together as a class. Some of the students have asked for me to send the link to you so they can practise at home. This is the link here. Costumes have not yet been decided but I will discuss these with the students next week so we can start getting ready. Christmas is such a special time at school and I am excited for the lead up!

Absent from School

I will be absent from school on Friday 15th November and 18th November and the class will be covered by Ms.Temple, Ms. Tanisha and Mr. Green.

We have a busy week ahead and I am sure that it will be full of fun and great learning! <3

Have a great weekend,

Kind regards

Mrs. Sim
