Mrs Sim - 2024/25

  • Mrs. Sim – Weekly Update Term 1 Week 6

Hello and Happy Friday to you all! I hope you have all had a great week!

Let’s take a look at what we have been learning this week!

In Maths, we have been getting really great at transitioning from our stations and making good progress. Year 1 sat their end of Unit Assessments and all did very well yesterday.

This week we completed the following objectives:

    Year 1

    1.13 – Compare numbers
1.14 – Order objects and numbers
    1.15 – The number line
    Assessment
2.1 – Introduce parts and wholes

    Year 2

    1.12 – Compare objects
    1.13 – Compare numbers
1.14 – Order objects and numbers

I will be sending home the Year 1’s unit workbook next week as we started our new unit ‘Addition and Subtraction’ today.

In Literacy, we finished reading our story “Lost and Found’. The Year 1 students enjoyed retelling the story and making sentences to match pictures. They are becoming more confident in using capital letters and full stops. They also enjoyed making sentences using pictures and speech bubbles for the characters.

Year 2 students worked on writing short paragraphs to retell the story. We looked at using adjectives in our sentences and tried to include the feelings of the characters too.

In Phonics, we have been very busy as always 🙂 Learning new sounds, reading new words and practising fluency. I will be reassessing the students around week 9 or 10 to ensure they are always in the correct group for their level.

In IPC, we have had a lot of fun. We finished our beautiful sensory boards. Learned all about how the eye sees, by roleplaying the various steps, ordering pictures and making lovely information posters. We also got out the flashlights and did a little experiment to see how the pupil changes size. We made diagrams of our eye and labelled the different parts.

We finished up today with a little goodbye party for Brendan. His parents brought in some treats for his friends to share.

Please remember that next week is a 3 day week with Tuesday the 1st and Thursday the 3rd being national holidays. Hope you all have a nice rest together 🙂

Have a great weekend and see you all on Monday!

Enjoy our week in pictures 🙂

Mrs. Sim – Weekly Update Term 1 Week 5

    Dear Parents,

I hope you all enjoyed some family time over the Chuseok break. The children have been a little tired this week so I am thinking they all had a lot of fun over the holiday 🙂

I sent a phonics presentation to you all earlier today. Please do look over it and use it to help your child at home. Phonics can be a little tricky with all the terminology! I hope you all find it informative and helpful.

Phonics books were sent home today for all groups along with Homework. It would be great if you listened to your child read the phonics book to you. Help them to sound out any difficult words and praise them for thier progress.

Please don’t feel rushed to send the homework back before Friday. A little a day is better for thier little brains 🙂

It has been a very short 2 day week this week but we have been very busy learning as always. Here are a few pictures of our lessons!

Have a wonderful weekend and see you all on Monday,

    Mrs. Sim

Mrs. Sim – Weekly Update Term 1 Week 4

    Happy Chuseok to you all!

We have had a busy week in Year 1/2 with lots of fun learning happening.

We started the week with our new unit “Super Humans” in IPC. It was an exciting first lesson with a surprise guest from our wonderful  dentist, Mrs. Nila. Naka’s mum prepared a wonderful lesson for the children. She taught them how to brush their teeth properly and  we had the opportunity to practise flossing our teeth together. The students all got given check-ups and Mrs Nila was very impressed with how well the children had looked after their teeth. At the end of the lesson we made tooth hats. It was a great lesson and we are so thankful for Mrs. Nila’s time, knowledge and effort put in. Thank you!

We continued the week looking at our senses and parts of the body. We did a lot of collaborative work and created two life size body masterpieces. One has been named ‘Rainbow’ and the other ‘Smile’.

We also took a look at different animals and explored their similarities and differences. We agreed that the Chimpanzee was most human-like!

We finished up on Friday with a Sensory walk around the school grounds and the children enjoyed touching plants, grass on their feet, listening to cars and motorcycles and tasting some home-grown vegetables from the school garden.

In Maths this week we covered the followed objectives:

    Year 1

    1.9 – 1 less
1.10 – Compare groups by matching
    1.11 – Fewer, more, same
1.12 – Less than, greater than, equal to

    Year 2

    1.7 – Flexibly partition numbers to 100
1.8 – Write numbers to 100 in expanded form
    1.9 – 10s on the number line to 100
    1.10 – 10s and 1s on the number line to 100

We spent time at the beginning of the week reviewing how to transition from our Maths stations as they were getting a little sloppy and we wanted to improve the time spent transitioning so we have more time learning 🙂

In Literacy, the year 1 students practised writing sentences about the boy in our story “Lost and Found”. The boy and the penguin have set off in their boat to the South pole to look for Penguin’s home. We looked at adjectives to describe the waves and practised making sentences to describe them. The Year 2 students worked on a diary entry explaining how they would feel if they were sailing through the crashing waves. Both Year groups are ensuring they are using the correct punctuation when writing and the Year 2 students are making sure to add expanded noun phrases in their writing.

Phonics rotations are going very well and I am proud of the whole-school phonics programme. The small group instruction allows for teachers to really support students and listen to them read daily. Since we only have a 2 day week next week, phonics books will be sent home next Friday.

Library books were sent home and should be returned on Friday the 20th September. I ask the children to try and take one phonics book and 2 books for enjoyment to read with their parents or family members at home.

Due to the Chuseok Holiday there was no homework sent out yesterday. I hope you can all have a nice break and do something fun with your family.

Have a great weekend and see you all on Thursday 19th September!

    Take care,

    Mrs. Sim 🤩

Mrs. Sim – Weekly Update Term 1 Week 3

    Dear Parents,

I am writing to you feeling very proud of the students after a wonderful presentation at the assembly! We showed the whole school our great dancing and singing and taught them all about the parts of the brain! They did such a great job! Well done Year 1/2.

Let’s take a look at what we have been learning this week 🤩

In Maths we have covered the following objectives:

    Year 1

    1.4 – Represent objects

1.5 – Recognise numbers as words

1.6 – Count on from any number

    1.7 – 1 more

    1.8 – Count backwards within 10

    Year 2

    1.4 – Use a place value chart

    1.5 – Partition numbers to 100

1.6 – Write numbers to 100 in words

    1.7 – Flexibly partition numbers to 100

The students are becoming more comfortable with our rotation transitions and have been working hard in our small groups. We will be reviewing partition numbers to 100 in Year 2 next week as this was a little tricky.

In Literacy, we are now halfway through our story ‘Lost and Found’ (much to the students’ disappointment as they want to keep reading and reading ;)). This week we went on a hunt to find facts about penguins! They were hidden around the school and the students had fun trying to find them all. After gathering them all, we made a fact file about penguins.

The Year 1 students are becoming more confident writing simple sentences while the Year 2 students are being challenged to use expanded noun phrases in their writing.

In IPC, we finished off our unit Brainwave with our wonderful performance and presentation on the brain. The children learned about the brain using our wonderful friend animals to help us. We spoke about the importance of calming the guard dog (amygdala) when our emotions get a little bit difficult. We also made our fantastic brains, where we painting the neurons and made little bubbles showing what our brain controls.

In P.E we continued with our Adventure Games unit focusing on working in partners. We played follow the leader, practised throwing and catching and enjoyed a game called ‘The Octopus’. We are working on our spatial awareness and also our emotions when we are playing whole class games. I want the children to enjoy the P.E. lessons and to know that they are only games. We cannot win everytime and the lessons are to improve specific skills. This is something that will take some time.

Please not that small speed sound books have not been sent home yet for some groups as the students have been reviewing set 1 digraphs (special friends) this week. Some children will have a phonics book in their bag to practise what they have done in class. If there is no book, it is because your child has been reviewing sounds 🙂

Homework and Library books went home today. Thank you for all your effort recording your child’s sleep and food. If you haven’t sent it to school yet please do so on Monday. It will be great for our review lesson on Monday.

    That’s all for this week!

Mrs. Sim – Weekly Update Term 1 Week 2

    Dear parents,

It was so nice to see you all at the Curriculum Meeting on Monday. Thank you all for coming. I hope you found it informative and enjoyed getting to know everyone. I loved reading your notes about your child and I found them very helpful.

The class has done much better this week following routines and getting used to their new class. Year 1 students may be extra tired as it is a big transition moving up to Year 1. This usually improves after the Chuseok Break as they adjust to their new environment and curriculum.

In Maths this week, we officially started the curriculum working out way through out first 3 objectives! They did very well transitioning from Tuff Trays-Technology-”Meet with Mrs.Sim. We are ready to really get going next week and I have lots of fun activities planned.

Year 1 looked at  sorting objects, counting objects, and counting objects from larger groups.

Year 2 reviewed numbers to 20, practiced counting to 100 making groups of 10, and learned how to recognise tens and ones using various methods and manipulatives.

In Literacy, we started our Phonics Rotations and the students have been adjusting to their groups and reviewing lots of sounds that they had forgotten over the summer ;). The small speed sound books/ Storybooks were not sent home for Year 1 students as we spent the week reviewing sounds. Next week we will start the story books.

In Literacy lessons we read more of our StoryBook “Lost and Found” and spent time making labels for some of the animals that were lost! We also made a fact file for Pandas and Dolphins to help the man in the Lost and Found find the animals’ parents. 🙂

Year 1 learned the importance of using Capital letters for names of People and Year 2 used expanded noun phrases to describe their animals.

In IPC, we had A LOT of fun this week! Professor Spark asked us to find out where we can get knowledge from so we went on a scavenger hunt to find all the objects and people that may be able to help us learn!

We also got asked by Professor Spark to make him a balanced meal to help keep his brain healthy! We learned that our brains need: exercise, water, balanced meals and lots of sleep!

Here they are working hard to make a healthy balanced meal!

Lastly, we have nearly finished our “We all belong here” celebrations with just two more students to be celebrated! It really has made the children feel special and learn how important kind words are to people.

    That’s all for this week!

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and have something fun planned.

    Mrs. Sim 🥰

    Weekly Update – Term 1 Week1

    Happy Friday to you all!

We have had a very busy week here in Year 1/2. We have spent a lot of time learning our classroom routines, including Our Morning Routine, Our voice-o-meter, Tidying up, Well-being check-in and the calm corner. We also discussed personal space and explicitly taught what it is and what to do when someone invades our space.

Here is a link to the book I used which I think is wonderful. It would be great to watch together with your child.

My Body has a Bubble by Nell Harris Kids Book Read Aloud

We also started our “We all belong here” celebrations. Here is how it works:

I hope it brings each of your children some joy 🙂

We have not officially started our Maths Curriculum as I need to spend time teaching the children about our rotations, our maths programmes on the tablets and how to smoothly transition from each of our stations. This is a vital part of the year to set us up for a year of great learning!

In Literacy, we started our new unit “Lost and Found”. The Year 1 students got their first Literacy book and practised writing the date using a ruler to underline it. Their first objective is to combine words to make a sentence. We looked at a picture from the story and verbally made sentences. We then wrote our first sentences at the end of the week and I was very impressed with their effort. We are focusing on Capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. The homework is related to what we have completed in class. Year 2 students practised writing sentences too but theirs had to include adjectives to describe what they could see.

The Year 2 students are working very well independently and have been my little helpers this week. It is lovely to see them helped their younger classmates.

In IPC, we started our Brainwave Unit “The Brain” and have been learning about neurons, memory and what our brain controls. We had great fun “operating” on some brains that Professor Spark delivered to school ;).

I would like to remind parents that we have a student in the class who has a severe nut allergy. Therefore no nuts should be sent as a snack. I am sorry for the inconvenience if your child likes nuts but we are trying to keep it as safe as possible 🙂 Thank you for your understanding.

Today, Homework and Library books were sent home and should be returned in the yellow folder next Friday 🙂

I hope you all have a lovely weekend!

    Take care,

    Mrs. Sim

    Mrs. Sim’s Weekly Update – Term 1 Week 0

    Dear Parents,

What a lovely first day we had in Year 1/2. It was so nice to meet the children, old students and new! We spent time learning about our routines, the importance of working together, being a “Class Family” and working collaboratively. I think we are going to have a great year together.

    Indoor Shoes

May I ask for students to bring indoor shoes to school if they haven’t already. Something like these would be perfect. It keeps the classroom nice and clean as we often sit in different areas on the floor in our classroom. Thank you 🙂

Starting next week, we have P.E. on Tuesday and Friday. Please make sure that children wear the grey or navy school T-shirt (or a comfortable T-shirt) and shorts/trousers that they can run around in. Also, don’t forget to wear trainers! 🙂

Here are some pictures of our very first day. Happy Birthday to Kali who turned 5 today! <3

Have a lovely weekend and see you all on Monday!

Welcome to Year 1/2 with Mrs.Sim

    Dear Year 1/2 Parents,

I am so so excited to be your child’s teacher and start a wonderful year of learning.

To my OLD and NEW Students

We will spend the first few weeks helping you settle in and making sure you all have lots of friends. My only expectations are that you are kind to others and try your best. There is no need to feel scared about the work being too tricky or making mistakes. We all make them, even the teachers! We believe that mistakes are a good thing in Year 1/2 as they show us what we need to learn next and help us find different ways to learn new things.

Please make sure that you arrive at school each day with the following things:

    1. A well rested body (sleep well) and a full tummy (eat breakfast)
    2. A refillable water bottle with your name on it
    3. A backpack to carry your lunch box and water bottle
    4. Lunch and a morning snack (please put your snacks in a small pouch).

On Tuesday and Friday we have P.E. On these days please make sure to wear the HFS grey P.E t-shirt, comfortable trousers and of course some trainers to help you run fast! (No P.E. first day back).

If you have any questions or would like to discuss anything before starting please feel free to email me at leighemmasim@hyundaiforeignschool.com.

See you all on Friday 🙂

    Mrs. Sim <3
