This week in art class, the Year 5–6 students completed their beautiful hanji moon jar collages. They carefully arranged and layered pieces of traditional Korean paper to express the gentle curves and peaceful atmosphere of the moon jars, inspired by Kim Whanki’s famous series. This week, the Year 7–9 students continued developing their 3D Guitar Art projects, focusing on adding detail and refining the final elements. It was great to see their dedication as they worked to bring their creative visions to life. Students who completed their guitars moved on to a new project inspired by traditional Korean art. They began creating beautiful Korean bamboo tree artworks using hanji (traditional Korean paper). This week, Yeseo learned about the renowned Korean artist Lee Jung-seob.We explored his life story, especially his deep love for his family and how he expressed his emotions through art. Yeseo was especially moved by his drawings of children and ox, and how he used both pictures and heartfelt letters to show his longing and affection for his loved ones. We also discovered that during difficult times, when he couldn’t afford proper materials, Lee Jung-seob created art using silver foil from cigarette packs and chocolate wrappers. Building on last week’s lesson, the children added colour and detail to their own interpretations of Kim Whanki’s paintings, inspired by the masterpiece they had chosen. This week, the Year 7–9 students continued their amazing progress on the 3D Guitar Art project by creating the neck and tuners of their guitars. Last week, Yeseo began a project with the theme “Rainy Day,” where she designed her own umbrella filled with animals she loves. Her creativity truly stood out, as she confidently expressed her ideas without using any reference images. This week, Yeseo completed her umbrella painting using permanent markers and acrylic paints. The result was both vibrant and full of personality! She also created a pair of Gomusin (traditional Korean shoes) as part of our upcoming Korean Traditional Art Show.
