Ulsan Children’s Home Christmas Gifts

So far we have 12 out of 50 gifts purchased!

Each year, HFS buys Christmas presents for the children at Ulsan Children’s Home, which has provided a loving home to disadvantaged children in Ulsan since 1947.

This is a wonderful way for our school community to spread Christmas cheer and support those less fortunate than ourselves.

If you would like to buy a gift for a child at Ulsan Children’s Home:

  1. Choose a gift from the children’s wish list.
  2. Write the name of the HFS student buying the gift in column A of the table.
  3. Order the gift using the link provided.
  4. Wrap the gift — it’s lovely to include some sweets or a short note.
  5. Send the wrapped gift to school before the end of term.
  6. The school (Santa!) will deliver the gifts during the holidays.

TGMC Kindness Market

Children’s International Festival

Students in Ms Temple’s and Mr Dunn’s classes will be participating in the Children’s International Festival on Wednesday, November 26, during school hours.
The festival will take place at the Buk-gu Cultural Art Center and will begin at 1:00 PM.
Families are warmly invited to come and enjoy the performances.
Students will be bringing home a flyer today, so please check their school bags.

Name Change Update

After receiving strong support from our school community through the recent survey, the name change to Ulsan Hyundai International School was approved by the Hyundai Education Foundation Board at their most recent meeting.

We are now finalising the required paperwork with the Ulsan Metropolitan Office of Education. Once formal approval has been granted, we will begin implementing the necessary logistical changes. We anticipate that most of this process will be completed over the winter break, and the school will start with the new name from Term 2.

New Buses

HFS will be getting brand new buses!

Look out for the new, smaller, more comfortable buses sometime next week.

Winter Show Talents

The students have been invited to show off a talent during the talent show part of our Winter Show.

The form for registering a talent show entry is included below.

Communication with the School Leadership

At HFS, we value open and respectful communication with our parent community. If you ever have a concern or question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the school directly so we can listen, clarify, and work together toward a positive solution. The school has a consultative body called the School Consultative Group for such a purpose, and the doors of the Principal’s and Executive Board Member’s Office are always open for discussion at all times. Through open discussions and by exploring the solutions together, we can ensure that every concern is handled fairly and in the best interests of the whole school community.

Construction Work

Construction work to build a new car park and alternate entrance for the school will begin next week and continue through to the end of the year. The diagram below shows the area that will be affected. Learning and school operations will continue as normal, though there may be some occasional noise during the construction period.

Please note that the construction of an additional entrance is required by the government and the cost is being born by HD Hyundai.

HFS Newsletter – T1W8

It’s been another busy and exciting week at school, with creative learning happening across all classes and lots of anticipation for next week’s Halloween celebrations! Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm as we move through a lively and rewarding first term together.

Halloween

Our amazing Halloween party is next Friday, 24th October, from 2pm to 4.30pm, and the PTA and helpers are already busy creating a wonderful experience for our students.

Please note:

  • Students are encouraged to dress up in a Halloween costume on this day. They could come to school wearing the costume or change after lunch. All costumes should be appropriate for a school setting.
  • The event will finish at 4.30pm, and buses will run at this time. There will be no 3.30pm bus on this day.
  • Candy donation are welcomed by the PTA and should be sent to the Admin Office before Thursday
  • Parents are very welcome to attend the Halloween event. Make sure you dress up!

Masks Decorating Competition

All students have been given a blank paper mask to decorate in with their most imaginative Halloween design.

Please bring your mask on the day of the Halloween party.
The most creative mask will win a prize!

A letter from the PTA

This year, our PTA has become much smaller, and it has been challenging to manage activities.

As a result, we are facing a shortage of funds for organizing school events and activities for the students.
To support these programs, we will be starting a voluntary donation campaign.
There is no set amount — even a 500 KRW donation is deeply appreciated.
You can contribute anytime through the PTA donation box located at the school.
The donation box will be placed in a visible spot during school events, so please feel free to participate when you attend.
If you would like, you may include your child’s name with your donation to be acknowledged, or you may give anonymously if you prefer.
All donations are managed separately through the PTA account by the school and are used
100% for student events and activities.
We sincerely appreciate your warm support and participation.
Thank you

Parent Consultative Group – Prospective Member

Mrs Park Hee Eun (Hayome’s mother) has kindly expressed her interest in joining the Parent Consultative Group. If there are no objections or additional parents wishing to join, Mrs Park will become a member of the group from our next meeting.

In accordance with the group’s policy, if more parents express interest, an election will be held to determine the new member. Please contact Mr Green if you would like to discuss this matter further.

The school is very appreciative of parents who actively contribute to our community by sharing their perspectives and supporting collaboration between families and the school.

Invitation to the WeHOPE Culture Festa

HFS has been invited to take part in the upcoming WeHOPE Culture Festa, an international community event celebrating diversity and cultural exchange in Ulsan. The festival will take place at Taehwa Riverside on Saturday 8th November and will feature cultural performances, activity booths and an international flea market.

WeHOPE has warmly invited our school community to participate through performances, cultural displays or family-run booths. This is a wonderful opportunity to share the international spirit of HFS and connect with the wider Ulsan community.

If you are interested in being involved, please contact the school.

Ramen for Lunch

To help keep our students safe at lunchtime, we ask that students in Mrs Sim’s and Miss Staines’ classes do not bring ramen for lunch. It is not possible to supervise each student as they pour hot water and move around the cafeteria.

Art Updates

Please remember that Miss Yuli posts an update of what each class has been doing in art each week.

Be sure to check them out!

Jigsaw School Charter

As part of our whole-school approach to PSHE through the Jigsaw program, we have created a Jigsaw Charter together. This charter helps us build a safe, respectful, and caring classroom community.

Each class has discussed and agreed on simple rules to help everyone feel comfortable to share, listen, and learn together. These include taking turns to speak, using kind and positive words, respecting others’ privacy, and listening carefully to each other.

The Jigsaw Charter will guide how we behave and interact, supporting our students’ emotional wellbeing and social development throughout the year.

Happy Chuseok!

We wish our HFS families a joyful and peaceful Chuseok. This special time reminds us to pause, give thanks and celebrate the people who bring meaning to our lives. At HFS, we are grateful for the strong sense of community that connects our students, staff and families, much like Chuseok itself, which celebrates gratitude, family and togetherness.

May your days be filled with warmth, good food and happy moments shared with loved ones.

Happy Chuseok from HFS 🌕🍂

Name Change Survey

As many of you will already be aware, as part of our ongoing development, HFS is exploring the possibility of changing our name to Ulsan Hyundai International School. This change would reflect more clearly the international education we provide, our diverse community, and our strong ties to both Ulsan and HD Hyundai. We would greatly value your thoughts on this proposal.

Please take a few minutes to read the explanation contained below and complete our short parent survey.

We surveyed parents in February 2024, and we are now running a second survey to ensure that every parent’s opinion is represented, including new families.

We hope to hear from every parent, so we will be sending gentle reminders and giving friendly follow-up calls from next week.

School Consultative Group Meeting

Thank you to the parents and staff who attended our School Consultative Group meeting on Wednesday, 1st October. As always, the school is very grateful to Mr Donnison, who acts as a parent representative and shared valuable opinions and feedback from a parent’s perspective. We are keen to hear from any parent who wishes to join this group, and Mr Donnison is happy to hear from parents who would like to suggest agenda items for our next meeting.

The group discussed a range of important topics for the school community:

  • Policy Reviews – All school policies and handbooks are being updated and are now available on the school website as live documents. Parents will always have access to the most up-to-date versions.
  • School Name Change – A parent survey on the proposed new name, Ulsan Hyundai International School, will run from 3rd to 17th October. Reminders will be sent to encourage all families to share their views.
  • CIS Accreditation – HFS will begin its new CIS accreditation cycle with a preliminary engagement visit in May 2026, followed by a second visit in 2027. Parents will have opportunities to meet the CIS visitor.
  • Facilities Update – Construction of a separate entrance to meet legal requirements will be completed by December 2025. Student drop-off arrangements will remain the same.
  • School Bus – New buses will begin service soon, possibly by the end of Term 1. From the academic year 2026/27, the school plans to introduce a modest bus fee (much lower than nearby international schools) to cover improvements such as a dedicated bus monitor, freeing teaching assistants to focus on classroom support. Further details will follow.
  • Assessment – The school is considering moving from Cambridge Insight and Checkpoint tests to MAP testing, which offers more useful feedback for teachers and parents. Parent opinions will be gathered in October before a final decision in November.

The next meeting of the School Consultative Group will take place on Wednesday 28th January 2026.

Invitation to the WeHOPE Culture Festa

HFS has been invited to take part in the upcoming WeHOPE Culture Festa, an international community event celebrating diversity and cultural exchange in Ulsan. The festival will take place at Taehwa Riverside on Saturday 8 November and will feature cultural performances, activity booths and an international flea market.

WeHOPE has warmly invited our school community to participate through performances, cultural displays or family-run booths. This is a wonderful opportunity to share the international spirit of HFS and connect with the wider Ulsan community.

If you are interested in being involved, please contact the school.

Bus Reminder

Please help us keep the school bus safe and efficient for everyone by following these rules:

  • Any changes to pick-up or drop-off must be arranged through the Admin Office.
  • Changes to a student’s daily schedule should be communicated to the Admin Office by 1:00 pm.
  • If you are collecting a student from school, please come to the main entrance and collect them in person.

Mr Green out of School

Mr Green will be away from school on Friday 3rd October (Week 6) and Friday 10th October (Week 7). He will be travelling to Yoyogi International School in Japan to lead a CIS Accreditation Team Visit.

  • Please note that all costs for CIS Team Visits are met by the host school. This means that when HFS staff take part in visits to other schools, there is no cost to HFS. These opportunities give our staff valuable professional development and help us strengthen our school through shared best practice.

Eco-Warriors Club Cancelled in Week 7

Please note that there will be no Eco-Warriors after-school activity in Week 7. This is because Mr Green is away from school this week. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Thank you, as always, for your support in making HFS such a vibrant and welcoming community for our students.

On this day, students may:

  • Enjoy their own snack from home, or
  • Purchase snacks prepared by the PTA.

Please remember that students who want to purchase snacks from the PTA Snack Market next Friday will need to bring some coins or small notes.

Fire Alarm

On Thursday, we carried out a fire drill to ensure that all staff and students are familiar with the correct procedures if the fire alarm sounds during the school day. The drill went smoothly, with everyone evacuating the building safely and assembling at the designated area at the far end of the football pitch.

We would also like to remind all visitors that, in the event of a fire alarm, they must evacuate immediately and join us at the muster point at the end of the pitch. For this reason, it is very important that all visitors sign in at reception on arrival so that we can account for everyone on site.

Regular practice like this helps us to keep our community safe and ensures that students, staff and visitors all know exactly what to do in the unlikely event of an emergency.

Bus Code of Conduct

To help us keep the school bus a safe and respectful space for all children, we kindly ask all families to complete the Bus Code of Conduct Form. If you have not yet done so, please submit the form by Friday 12th September using the link below:

Bus Code of Conduct

Thank you for supporting positive behaviour and safety on the bus.

Also, for safety reasons, students should board and get off the bus only at their designated stop. We check boarding based on the stop that was registered, so using a different stop may cause confusion and raise safety concerns.

SKAIS Events

The South Korea Association of International Schools (SKAIS) is a network of international schools that work together to share best practices and organise interschool events. As a member, Hyundai Foreign School gives students the chance to join activities with peers from across the country, helping them build friendships and teamwork skills and enjoy some competitive sport. – SKAIS Website

We are hoping to take part in the events listed below this term.

Upcoming SKAIS Events

  • Saturday 27th September – Cross Country at ISB – Years 5 and above

Notes:

  • Parents may be asked to share the cost of transport to events their children are participating in
  • Even if we don’t have enough students to make a team, it is possible to still participate in team events by forming ‘SKAIS United’ teams with other small schools
  • Students from HFS will be accompanied, coached and supervised by our staff
  • The school will arrange transport based on the number of students attending
  • If you have any questions about SKAIS Events, please contact Mr Green

If you think your child may want to join a SKAIS event, please complete the form below so that we can gauge interest and start making some plans. Further details will follow.

Starting in Week 5, Ms Jiyu will be taking 6 months off school for parenting leave. Ms Jiyu will be replaced by Ms Ann, who was interviewed this week. Ms Ann will be in school and on the bus shadowing Ms Jiyu next week, as well as completing training at school.

We wish Ms Jiyu a happy leave period, and we look forward to seeing her again in the new year.

New IPC/IMYC Units

At HFS, our students learn through the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC).

These exciting, cross-curricular units link subjects such as science, history, art and geography through big ideas that make learning meaningful and fun. English and Mathematics are taught through separate programmes, giving students a strong foundation in core skills alongside their wider thematic learning.

From hands-on entry points to creative exit projects, our students build knowledge, skills and global awareness – growing into curious, confident and compassionate learners

Here are the exciting units that classes are about to start studying.

Lunches

To help lunch run smoothly, we ask parents to consider:

  • Microwaveable lunchboxes – If food needs to be heated up, it should be in a microwaveable container. Spills most often happen when we have to transfer food to another container to be heated.
  • Cutlery – Please provide eating utensils.
  • Dropped Lunches – Sometimes students drop their lunches. If a lunch is dropped on the floor, the Admin Office will contact parents for a replacement, so that your child can still enjoy their lunch. The school cannot provide food.

It has been a wonderful start to the school year at HFS, and we are so grateful to all the parents who joined us for class orientation meetings this week. Your support means so much to us as we work together to give your children the best possible learning experience. In this update you’ll find information about after-school activities, PTA events, library reminders, SKAIS sports opportunities and other important dates. We hope you find it helpful and, as always, please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Class Orientation Meetings

Thank you to all the parents who attended our class orientation meetings this week. We greatly appreciate the time you took to join us and your continued support for our school.

During the meetings, teachers shared important information about class routines, expectations, and the exciting learning opportunities ahead this year. We hope you found the sessions helpful in understanding how we can work together to support your child’s learning journey.

For those who were unable to attend, or if you would like to revisit the presentations, they are now available on the class pages and can also be accessed directly below.

We encourage you to look through the slides and reach out to your child’s teacher if you have any further questions.

Important Class Information Presentations:

Is Everyone Safe and Happy?

This simple safeguarding promise reminds our students that:
– All adults at HFS are here to listen and act quickly if they need help.
– Their rights to safety, happiness, and fairness are always respected.
– They can always talk to a trusted adult, write a note, or ask their parents to help them share their worries.

This poster is displayed around school, and we show it to the student at every assembly.

Together, we look out for one another so that every child at HFS feels safe, supported, and happy.

Our full Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy and Procedures can be found on the HFS website.

After-School Activities

We are excited to let you know that our After-School Activities programme will start next week.

Please take a moment to check the sign-up list below to confirm your child’s participation and review the bus schedule for after-school activities. This will help ensure that all children are safely accounted for and that travel arrangements run smoothly.

NB: To make sure activities and buses run smoothly, we cannot accept additional sign-ups or changes after Week 3.

At Hyundai Foreign School we want to encourage students to read as widely as possible.

To help us achieve this, we ask for your support with the following:

  • Please make sure your child brings their library books to school every Friday for library time.
  • Books should come to school even if they do not need to be changed, as we want to enjoy some quiet reading time together at school.
  • All students are expected to borrow books from the library.

Thank you for helping us foster a love of reading in our students.

PTA Snack Market

The PTA will hold a Snack Market during the morning break on Friday 19th September, as a fundraiser for the PTA budget.
