Hello everyone!

Another short week with two national holidays on the Tuesday and Thursday, the children still explored lots of new learning. Here is a quick overview for the week.

In English, we planned an informal letter using events from “The Seal Surfer” as the content. The students focused on incorporating key learnings from this unit into their plans to ensure their writing would be successful.

In Maths, the children began exploring addition using the column addition method to solve problems. We also concentrated on the concept of carrying a digit when two numbers in a place value column add up to more than 9.

During our IPC lessons, the students investigated the digestive system. To start, groups cut out key organs, labeled them, and placed them in the correct positions. Next, the children researched what happens at each stage of the digestive system and began creating posters to showcase their learning.

We’ve had an exciting week filled with lots of learning and hard work in each subject, here are some of the highlights.

In English, our class answered comprehension questions about the text “The Seal Surfer” and explored writing a recount from a different perspective. Afterwards, the students examined the features of a letter, highlighting and labeling these on an example as we plan to practice writing our own letters over the next few weeks.

We began a new unit in math focused on addition and subtraction. The students practiced adding and subtracting 1s, 10s, 100s, and 1000s. They utilized their partitioning skills from the previous unit, especially when crossing place value boundaries.

During our IPC lessons, we investigated how our ears work and learned about sound. The students created doodle notes in comic strip format to illustrate their understanding, incorporating drawings and explanations. Additionally, they made pan pipes to explore how different sounds are produced. We also examined our teeth; the students used mirrors to identify different types and wrote about each one’s function.

We had a short week due to the Chuseok holiday, I hope everyone enjoyed the little break. Here’s a quick overview of our activities this week.

In math, we have reached the end of our unit on place value. We spent Thursday reviewing the unit before completing a mini-assessment. Next week, we will begin our new unit on addition and subtraction.

During our guided reading sessions on Fridays, we focus on fostering a love of reading. The children have time to read their library books or a selection from our class library, this also allows me to listen to each student read.

In IPC, the students reviewed the parts of the eye by labeling them using an interactive diagram. They then completed a flipbook detailing the parts of the eye and their functions.

Additionally, we finished our INCAS assessments in both math and literacy.

Hello everyone!

An extra exciting week with a small Chuseok celebration on Thursday, it was great to see so many children dressed in their hanboks.

As it is the Chuseok break, no homework was sent home. I hope everyone has a a great break and ejoys the time off.

In English, we continued reading and exploring The Seal Surfer. We delved into the main character by selecting descriptive words and explaining our choices, focusing on his actions throughout the story. The class also engaged in a role-play activity to practice direct speech and write character descriptions. Additionally, we used the five senses to help describe various settings.

We are nearing the end of our unit on place value. The children have explored rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100, and 1000, as well as Roman numerals. They also spent some time on Education City and Sumdog, revisiting previously learned concepts.

We have begun our new IPC unit, How Humans Work. We started with an entry point where the children considered how their bodies react to exercise. Following this, they conducted a knowledge harvest on the human body. In groups, they traced around one person to label the different body parts. We then focused on the eye, creating an eye chart to test sight, labeling a diagram, and exploring the function of each part.

In English, the children performed a role-play they had created the previous week and then transformed it into direct speech, paying careful attention to the use of inverted commas and a reporting clause. They also wrote a diary entry from the main character’s perspective in “The Seal Surfer.”

In math, the students worked on problems involving number lines, as well as comparing and ordering numbers. They created different numbers and used their bodies to form the greater-than and less-than symbols, helping them to better understand how these symbols are used in comparisons.

For IPC, the children completed their project on the parts of the brain, assembling their models and research onto a large poster. We then moved on to exploring the connections between different subjects. Each child was given a topic and demonstrated how it could be explored from the perspective of each subject, placing their ideas onto a puzzle piece.
