HFS Newsletter – T1W3

Dear HFS Community,

We’re off to a lively start this term, with plenty of exciting events and updates to share. From the PTA Snack Market and preparations for Halloween, to new curriculum units, sports fixtures and safety reminders, there’s lots happening in and around school. Thank you, as always, for your support in making HFS such a vibrant and welcoming community for our students.

PTA Snack Market

The PTA will hold a Snack Market during the morning break on Friday 19th September, as a fundraiser for the PTA budget.
On this day, students may:

  • Enjoy their own snack from home, or
  • Purchase snacks prepared by the PTA.

Please remember that students who want to purchase snacks from the PTA Snack Market next Friday will need to bring some coins or small notes.

Parent donations for baked goods, simple finger foods, or store-bought snacks are welcome. They can be sent to the Admin Office with your child before Friday.

PTA Halloween

The PTA are busy organising an amazing Halloween event for the students on Friday 24th October. Further details to follow, but it is going to be great.

The PTA has a KakaoTalk group for anyone interested in helping with events or just keeping up to date with the PTA. All are welcome to join.

School Consultative Group

The Term 1 meeting of the School Consultative Group will be held on Wednesday 1st October.

Parents can forward agenda items for consideration to the Parent Representative – Mr Donnison. Hi s contact details are available from the Admin Office.

The School Consultative Group is looking for new parent representative members.

The School Consultative Group is a group of parents, teachers and administrators who meet termly to discuss school operations.

The purpose of this group is to:

  • To ensure smooth and effective communication amongst all stakeholders in the school
  • To help the school community acquire an improved understanding of the operation of the school
  • To more readily listen to the views and opinions of the school community and reflect them in the management of the school
  • School Consultative Group Policy and Procedures

Mr Donnison is currently our parent representative and is happy to continue in his role, but we would like another parent member to join. The school is very appreciative of the role played by parent representatives on the School Consultative Group in facilitating constructive dialogue amongst the school community.

If you would be interested in joining this group, please contact Mr Green. If more than one parent is interested in joining, elections will be held.

Fire Alarm

On Thursday, we carried out a fire drill to ensure that all staff and students are familiar with the correct procedures if the fire alarm sounds during the school day. The drill went smoothly, with everyone evacuating the building safely and assembling at the designated area at the far end of the football pitch.

We would also like to remind all visitors that, in the event of a fire alarm, they must evacuate immediately and join us at the muster point at the end of the pitch. For this reason, it is very important that all visitors sign in at reception on arrival so that we can account for everyone on site.

Regular practice like this helps us to keep our community safe and ensures that students, staff and visitors all know exactly what to do in the unlikely event of an emergency.

Bus Code of Conduct

To help us keep the school bus a safe and respectful space for all children, we kindly ask all families to complete the Bus Code of Conduct Form. If you have not yet done so, please submit the form by Friday 12th September using the link below:

Bus Code of Conduct

Thank you for supporting positive behaviour and safety on the bus.

Also, for safety reasons, students should board and get off the bus only at their designated stop. We check boarding based on the stop that was registered, so using a different stop may cause confusion and raise safety concerns.

SKAIS Events

The South Korea Association of International Schools (SKAIS) is a network of international schools that work together to share best practices and organise interschool events. As a member, Hyundai Foreign School gives students the chance to join activities with peers from across the country, helping them build friendships and teamwork skills and enjoy some competitive sport. – SKAIS Website

We are hoping to take part in the events listed below this term.

Upcoming SKAIS Events

  • Saturday 27th September – Cross Country at ISB – Years 5 and above
  • Tuesday 30th September – Elementary School Football at GIFS – Years 5 and 6
  • Saturday 15th November – Elementary School Football at ISB – Years 5 and 6
  • Thursday 20th November – Cross Country at DIS – Years 5 and above
  • Saturday 22nd November – Middle School Football at ISB – Years 7 and above

Notes:

  • Parents may be asked to share the cost of transport to events their children are participating in
  • Even if we don’t have enough students to make a team, it is possible to still participate in team events by forming ‘SKAIS United’ teams with other small schools
  • Students from HFS will be accompanied, coached and supervised by our staff
  • The school will arrange transport based on the number of students attending
  • If you have any questions about SKAIS Events, please contact Mr Green

If you think your child may want to join a SKAIS event, please complete the form below so that we can gauge interest and start making some plans. Further details will follow.

At HFS we believe in the power of friendly, competitive sports to build character in young people. We encourage as many students as possible to take part in SKAIS.

Ms Jiyu → Ms Ann

Starting in Week 5, Ms Jiyu will be taking 6 months off school for parenting leave. Ms Jiyu will be replaced by Ms Ann, who was interviewed this week. Ms Ann will be in school and on the bus shadowing Ms Jiyu next week, as well as completing training at school.

We wish Ms Jiyu a happy leave period, and we look forward to seeing her again in the new year.

New IPC/IMYC Units

At HFS, our students learn through the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC).

These exciting, cross-curricular units link subjects such as science, history, art and geography through big ideas that make learning meaningful and fun. English and Mathematics are taught through separate programmes, giving students a strong foundation in core skills alongside their wider thematic learning.

From hands-on entry points to creative exit projects, our students build knowledge, skills and global awareness – growing into curious, confident and compassionate learners

Here are the exciting units that classes are about to start studying.

Lunches

To help lunch run smoothly, we ask parents to consider:

  • Microwaveable lunchboxes – If food needs to be heated up, it should be in a microwaveable container. Spills most often happen when we have to transfer food to another container to be heated.
  • Cutlery – Please provide eating utensils.
  • Dropped Lunches – Sometimes students drop their lunches. If a lunch is dropped on the floor, the Admin Office will contact parents for a replacement, so that your child can still enjoy their lunch. The school cannot provide food.

Is Everyone Safe and Happy?

This simple safeguarding promise reminds our students that:
– All adults at HFS are here to listen and act quickly if they need help.
– Their rights to safety, happiness, and fairness are always respected.
– They can always talk to a trusted adult, write a note, or ask their parents to help them share their worries.

This poster is displayed around school, and we show it to the student at every assembly.

Together, we look out for one another so that every child at HFS feels safe, supported, and happy.

This includes all forms of individual gifts and group gifts. Even with the best intentions, giving these gifts could put the staff member and the school in legal trouble.

Gifts can only be accepted in the following circumstances:

  1. All HFS staff may receive gifts from parents/students who are permanently leaving the school.
  2. All HFS staff who are permanently leaving the school may receive gifts.
Gift-giving is a personal choice, and families are in no way obligated to give gifts in the above permissible circumstances. Well-wishing cards are allowed to be given at any time.

Your presence, encouragement, and enthusiasm made the day even more special for our students. Whether you were cheering from the sidelines, helping out behind the scenes, or simply sharing in the fun, your involvement truly contributed to the positive spirit and success of the event.

It was a joy to see so many families come together to celebrate teamwork, effort, and school pride. We are grateful for your continued support and look forward to many more shared experiences in the future.

Thank you once again for being part of such a memorable day!

A note from Miss Yuli

Dear Parents,

On Friday, June 13th, we will be holding a special art exhibition in the school hall, featuring selected artworks from Term 2 and Term 3.

The exhibition will showcase the meaningful and creative works of our students, who have worked with great enthusiasm and dedication throughout their art classes. We warmly invite all parents to attend and help us celebrate the children’s efforts and artistic growth.

As Korea is our host country, this exhibition will feature many pieces that reflect Korean culture and identity, created using traditional Korean materials. Students have also explored the lives and art of notable Korean artists, which will be represented in their work.

In addition, the exhibition will include art inspired by world-renowned artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Pablo Picasso, Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Henri Matisse, and Amedeo Modigliani.

We hope you will join us for this meaningful event and enjoy the wonderful display of student creativity.

Thank you!

Warm regards,
Miss Yuli
HFS Art Teacher
