Weekly Update-Term 1 Week 14

Dear Parents,

I hope you are all well. It was nice to see some of you this afternoon.

We had a lovely end to the week thanks to our dedicated PTA pulling off yet another great event. The students were so excited to bring in their money and purses and purchase new things.

We have just two short weeks left until the end of Term 1- I can’t quite believe it! We have been practising our dance this week and have made some good progress. Here is the link to the dance if your child would like to practise at home. It would be a huge help if you could play it and let them practise the dance along with their sentences for the performance.

In Maths this week, Year 1 have now finished the curriculum for Term 1 and will spend the last 2 weeks consolidating what they have learned so far. We have had fun reviewing addition and subtraction this week through fun tuff trays, card games and sticking activities.

Year 2 students spent time reviewing objectives from last week. We reviewed the following

2.15 – Add two 2-digit numbers (not across a 10)
2.16 – Add two 2-digit numbers (across a 10)
2.17 – Subtract two 2-digit numbers (not across a 10

In Literacy, the students wrote about their favourite sights in London and created a wonderful map of London! The Year 1 students focused on using ‘and’ to connect their sentences and the Year 2 students focused on using adverbs, ‘but’ and improving their use of adjectives. We finished reading the story “Katie in London” and the students have really enjoyed this one. There are a whole series of books with Katie as the main character by James Mayhew, some students expressed interest in wanting to read them. Maybe a nice stocking filler 😉 for Christmas.

In IPC, this week we have been looking at how pictures can give us information about the past. We looked at pictures of Seoul 100 years ago and compared them to recent pictures. We discussed how the clothes, buildings, transportation and streets have all developed so much. The children made me feel really old when I told them I didn’t have a mobile phone until I was 14!

We also did some activities related to our  “Museum of me” boxes. Last week, the students were given a large box which they decorated beautifully. Inside, we are collecting information about ourselves and our past. This week we added our timelines, created a fact file and wrote/drew about our favourite memories in class so far!

Christmas Clothes

The dresses for the show are due to arrive on the 4th of December. I will send them home with the students as soon as they arrive. The boys t-shirts arrived yesterday so I will send them home when the dresses arrive so as to not cause any upset 🙂

Phonics Assessments

Phonics assessments will be carried out next week on Tuesday to Thursday. It may be nice to review sounds with your child using the small green/yellow Speed Sound books. This allows me to check the children’s progress and ensure they are in the correct group for Term 2.

That’s all for this week. I hope you all have a nice weekend.

Take care,

Mrs. Sim
