Mrs Sim - 2024/25

  • Mrs. Sim – Weekly Update Term 2 Week 2

    Dear Parents,

Oh what a week we’ve had. There has been a lot of sickness this week in our class and many absences. I  hope everyone gets better soon 🙂I’m thinking of all those who aren’t feeling well.

I have stayed on track with the curriculum and with fewer students, we have gotten through a lot of work and had fun together.

In Maths, this week, Year 1 continued with their unit on Place Value and are due to finish it next week. The Year 2 students have been learning all about money and will sit an assessment for the end of the unit next week. Here are the objectives we studied:

    Year 1

    Spr.1.5 – Understand 17, 18 and 19
    Spr.1.6 – Understand 20
    Spr.1.7 – 1 more and 1 less
    Spr.1.8 – The number line to 20
    Spr.1.9 – Use a number line to 20

    Year 2

Spr.1.5 – Make the same amount
Spr.1.6 – Compare amounts of money
    Spr.1.7 – Calculate with money
    Spr.1.8 – Make a pound
    Spr.1.9 – Find change

In Literacy, we have read the first part of our class story “The Lion Inside” and the students did a lot of writing this week. We looked at the Mouse character and wrote sentences about him. We spent time brainstorming words to describe the setting of the story. The Year 2 students are learning all about progressive verbs and using because to explain. The Year 1 students are making sure to use the correct punctuation and use of ‘and’ in their sentences. I am proud of the progress they are making.

Phonics groups are running well and the students seem to really enjoy the small group activities.

In IPC this week we have continued on with our “Push me, Pull You” unit.

I have never laughed so much! We carried out an experiment to see if water is also a force that can move objects. We used a football and a volleyball and tried to move them using; a water gun, a bucket and a hose. We accidently sprayed Mr. Green and he got a little bit wet! The students were all correct with their predictions and it was a really lovely afternoon full of laughter.

We also investigated if air resistance increased when the surface area is bigger. The students had fun running up and down the pitch experimenting with different sizes of card in front of them.

    Homework

Inside the childrens homework folders there is a small laminated card with passwords and login details for both Sumdog (Maths) and EducationCity (Literacy and Math). Please feel free to use these at home if your child wishes to. I haven’t set any specific work but they can explore the various activities and review what we have learned in class.

Please find our Termly Curriculum Plan here for Term 2 to see what we will be studying.

Our Curriculum Overview is also available at the top of my Teaching Page.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend,

Take care and hope to see everyone back at school healthy next week.

    Mrs. Sim

Mrs. Sim – Weekly Update Term 2 Week 1

A warm welcome back and a very Happy New Year to you and your family. I hope 2025 is a wonderful year filled with love, laughter and happiness.

We have had a great first week back with lots of fun learning. I missed the students so much and it was great to be reunited. I think it is going to be a fantastic Term 2!

In Maths both Year groups started new units this week. Here are the objectives we covered:

    Year 1

    Spr.1.1 – Count within 20
    Spr.1.2 – Understand 10
    Spr.1.3 – Understand 11, 12 and 13
    Spr.1.4 – Understand 14, 15 and 16

    Year 2

    Spr.1.1 – Count money – pence
Spr.1.2 – Count money – pounds (notes and coins)
Spr.1.3 – Count money – pounds and pence
Spr.1.4 – Choose notes and coins

We are learning money using the British Pound as we follow the British Curriculum. This unit is always a little bit difficult as the children are not familiar with the coins. I have sent home a little bag of coins and notes so that the students can use them to familiarize themselves and use them if they need to when completing the homework (Please return the coins on Monday if you have completed the Homework over the weekend-if you need them for longer, no problem).

In Literacy this week, we started our new storybook, ‘The Lion Inside’. We started off by predicting what the story will be about. The children had a little assessment to see what objectives they have remembered from Term 1. They had to look at pictures and label/write sentences/write a story about what might happen. We then looked at the cover of the book and created sentences about the Lion and the Mouse. We used adjectives to describe them and wrote about the large rock in the story.

It is a lovely story with important messages within. I think we will really enjoy this unit of work.

In IPC, we started the unit “Push me, Pull You” and oh what fun we have had! We have been exploring the forces ‘push and pull’ and carried out lots of fun hands-on activites. The students looked at how their bodies move and which force is used for certain activities. We took a walk around the school to observe other students working and tried running, rolling and jumping to see if we were pushing, pulling or both!

Today we carried out a little investigation into how we can change movement and the children loved the cars. We found that the higher the ramp the faster the car went and if we blocked the road, the car would divert!

    P.E Footwear

I love all the childrens’ new winter boots but can I kindly ask that they bring trainers/sneakers for P.E. on Tuesday and Fridays. It is really hard for them to run in boots. If they want to bring them in a bag separately that is totally fine also. Thank you 🙂

That’s all for this week. Hope you all have a great weekend! Stay warm 🙂

    Mrs. Sim

Mrs. Sim – Weekly Update Term 1 Week 15

Ho Ho Hello Parents! Christmas is just around the corner and everyone is definitely getting in to the Christmas spirit now! 🙂

    Christmas Show

We have been very busy practising our dancing this week and the children are super excited to show you their great performance!

The dresses arrived and have been sent home with the students today.  I have bought small reindeer clips for the girls and headbands for the boys to wear at the Christmas Show. I will keep them in the classroom so that we don’t have anyone forgetting them on the day. Kano’s mum and Elena’s mum will be helping me with hair and getting the students ready for the show on the day-thank you!

May I ask that girls wear black leggings/tights under the dress and boys to wear blue jeans with their t-shirts?

I am really looking forward to seeing you all there 🙂

Our timetable has been a little different this week due to fitting in rehearsals but still lots of learning and fun has been happening. The students have been very excited by the mysterious letters the elf keeps leaving us each morning! Santa sent him on a trip around the world. Today he was in Japan on top of Mount Fuji 🤭🤭🤭

In Maths, Year 1 students have been enjoying some Christmas themed tuff trays, where Santa Claus made an appearance and the Christmas tree lost its addition baubles! We have reviewed addition, subtraction, greater than and less than and number sentences.

Year 2 students have continued working on adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers and yesterday started comparing numbers using greater than and less than symbols ><. Today we finished the week off trying to solve some missing number problems.

    Aut.2.18 – Subtract two 2-digit numbers (across a 10)
Aut.2.19 – Mixed addition and subtraction
    Aut.2.20 – Compare number sentences
    Aut.2.21 – Missing number problems

In Literacy, the students all became London tour guides and had a lot of fun creating their own tours around London. They had to decide on three places to take their tourists and prepare a piece of writing which had to include facts about each place. We will be practising them more next week and will perform them to the class.

In IPC, we took a look at the history of Korean thanksgiving and made posters about why it is celebrated. The children presented their work to the class in groups and explained why and how it is celebrated.

We then moved on to making a timeline using images and photographs showing the history and development of flight.

    We looked at:

    Montgolfier’s hot air balloon (1783)

    Henri Giffard’s airship (1852)

    Wright brothers’ bi-plane (1903)

First World War fighter plane (1914-18)

    Heinkel HE178 jet plane (1939)

     Comet jet airliner (1940s)

    Concorde (1976)

    Double-decker airbus (2007)

The dates were a little tricky but we managed to arrange the pictures and write the dates under the correct pictures.

    Phonics Books

This week, assessments took place from Tuesday to Thursday and I was very pleased with the progress all of the students have made.

As we approach the end of term, we will engage in an intensive sound workshop from now until the end of break. Lots of reviewing will take place. As such, no books will be sent home until next term. If you do have any remaining books at home please send them next week so we can arrange them all for next term.

    Christmas Show

The Christmas show will start at 2pm next Friday the 13th December. Please arrive for 1:45pm to make sure you get a seat and are settled before the show starts. There is a single bus running at 4:30pm but I assume most students will be going home with mum and dad after the show. Please do let me know if your child needs to take the bus home afterwards.

    Leavers

We sadly, have 3 students leaving us next Friday so we will be having a little goodbye party in class to wish them well. The students will be kindly given a cupcake and a juice from the parents. I hope they all enjoy and cherish the memory.

Wising you all a wonderful weekend. It would be great if you could ask your students to show you thier dance moves to get a little more practice in 🙂

Take care and see you all next week at the show!

    Mrs. Sim

    Weekly Update-Term 1 Week 14

    Dear Parents,

I hope you are all well. It was nice to see some of you this afternoon.

We had a lovely end to the week thanks to our dedicated PTA pulling off yet another great event. The students were so excited to bring in their money and purses and purchase new things.

We have just two short weeks left until the end of Term 1- I can’t quite believe it! We have been practising our dance this week and have made some good progress. Here is the link to the dance if your child would like to practise at home. It would be a huge help if you could play it and let them practise the dance along with their sentences for the performance.

In Maths this week, Year 1 have now finished the curriculum for Term 1 and will spend the last 2 weeks consolidating what they have learned so far. We have had fun reviewing addition and subtraction this week through fun tuff trays, card games and sticking activities.

Year 2 students spent time reviewing objectives from last week. We reviewed the following

    2.15 – Add two 2-digit numbers (not across a 10)
    2.16 – Add two 2-digit numbers (across a 10)
    2.17 – Subtract two 2-digit numbers (not across a 10

In Literacy, the students wrote about their favourite sights in London and created a wonderful map of London! The Year 1 students focused on using ‘and’ to connect their sentences and the Year 2 students focused on using adverbs, ‘but’ and improving their use of adjectives. We finished reading the story “Katie in London” and the students have really enjoyed this one. There are a whole series of books with Katie as the main character by James Mayhew, some students expressed interest in wanting to read them. Maybe a nice stocking filler 😉 for Christmas.

In IPC, this week we have been looking at how pictures can give us information about the past. We looked at pictures of Seoul 100 years ago and compared them to recent pictures. We discussed how the clothes, buildings, transportation and streets have all developed so much. The children made me feel really old when I told them I didn’t have a mobile phone until I was 14!

We also did some activities related to our  “Museum of me” boxes. Last week, the students were given a large box which they decorated beautifully. Inside, we are collecting information about ourselves and our past. This week we added our timelines, created a fact file and wrote/drew about our favourite memories in class so far!

    Christmas Clothes

The dresses for the show are due to arrive on the 4th of December. I will send them home with the students as soon as they arrive. The boys t-shirts arrived yesterday so I will send them home when the dresses arrive so as to not cause any upset 🙂

    Phonics Assessments

Phonics assessments will be carried out next week on Tuesday to Thursday. It may be nice to review sounds with your child using the small green/yellow Speed Sound books. This allows me to check the children’s progress and ensure they are in the correct group for Term 2.

That’s all for this week. I hope you all have a nice weekend.

    Take care,

    Mrs. Sim

Mrs. Sim – Weekly Update Term 1 Week 12

    Hello!

    Dear Parents,

    Happy Friday to you all!

Well, what a busy week we have had! Time has flown by!

The trip to Seonam Park was so much fun, and the sun shone all day for us. We enjoyed climbing, building, bubbles, ziplining, and bouncing! The children didn’t want to go home! I hope they made lots of great memories.

Let’s take a look at what we learned this week.

In Maths this week we have completed the following objectives:

    Year 1

    3.2 – Sort 3-D shapes
    3.3 – Recognise and name 2-D shapes
    3.4 – Sort 2-D shapes

Year 1 students have enjoyed exploring 2D and 3D shapes. We named, sorted and built houses using magnetic shapes!

    Year 2

    Aut.2.12 – Subtract a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number (across a 10)
    Aut.2.13 – 10 more, 10 less
    Aut.2.11 – Subtract from a 10 (review)
    Aut.2.14 – Add and subtract 10s

Year 2 students have built up their confidence using various strategies to solved subtraction and addition problems.

In Literacy, the students wrote all about Buckingham Palace! They had to imagine that they were the characters from the story and write about what they could see as they stood in front of the Palace. We made sure to use adjectives to describe those beautiful, golden gates! Year 2 students tried to use adverbs in their sentences and worked on using commas in their sentences.

The students will be writing about their favourite London sights next week!

In IPC, we continued on with our Unit “Time Travellers”. We began the week by doing a little “show and tell” which the students LOVED! It was lovely to see how proud they were of their belongings. They then made little labels to describe their belongings and give more information about them.

We explored time and did a sorting activity to familiarise ourselves with ‘years ago’, ‘months ago’, ‘weeks ago’ and ‘hours ago’. This led on to our final activity of the week where we created our very own timelines!

    Christmas Show Dance

Apologies for not sending the link in last week’s update. The children are eager to practise the dance at home too! Practise makes perfect as they say 🙂 This is what we are going to perform at the Christmas Show.

    Christmas Dance link

The Christmas Show will take place on Friday the 13th December.

It is still 4 weeks away yet but I would like to get a head and think about costumes for the big day. I have attached links and would be ever so grateful if you could order this for your child to wear on the day. I think it will look just beautiful to have them all in the same clothes 🙂 Delivery usually takes a week or so. If you have any problems getting it ordered, please do let me know and I would be happy to help you. As Christmas approaches things sell out fast so please do order sooner rather than later.

    Girl’s Dress

    Boy’s Tshirt (Burgandy colour)

    Thank you so much!

I hope you all have a lovely weekend.

    Kind regards

    Mrs. Sim

Mrs. Sim – Weekly Update Term 1 Week 11

    Dear Parents,

I hope you have all had a nice week. We have had a great week in Year 1/2 with lots of special moments.

The highlight of our week was meeting our destination on our Positive Pathway (our class’s Behaviour Support Programme). It was a long journey with a lot of obstacles along the way but we finally did it! Yay! The destination was “To be kind and respectful” focusing on…

I can see so much kindness in our classroom and it makes my heart happy! Well done!

In Maths this week, the Year 1 students sat their end of unit assessment for “Addition and Subtraction” and I am pleased to let you know that they all did wonderfully. We had a review day beforehand and sat the assessment on Thursday. I sent home their assessments in their bags yesterday. Give them a big hug for all their hard work. 🤗

Today, we started our new unit “Shapes” and had fun exploring 3D shapes, making trains and counting.

    This weeks’ objectives were:

    2.16 – Subtraction on a number line

    2.17 – Add or subtract 1 or 2

    Review for Assessment

    Assessment

    3.1 – Recognise and name 3-D shapes

Year 2 students are still working on their Addition and Subtraction Unit. There have been some more challenging objectives this week involving using different strategies and I will be reviewing some of the objectives next week. Whiterose Maths equips students with various ways of working out addition and subtraction so that the children can discover which way works best for them. The Year 1 and Year 2 curriculum especially, focuses on using manipulitives to support the children in visualising what they are doing. It is important  that students work on these strategies even if they can work out the sum mentally. This provides them with foundational skills in maths that will help them as they move up the school.

    Year 2 Objectives:

    2.9 – Add across a 10

    Review Add across 10

    2.10 – Subtract across 10

    2.11 – Subtract from a 10

    2.12 – Subtract a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number (across a 10)

In Literacy this week, we have been writing about the Tower of London, London Eye and The Tower Bridge. The students are slowly becoming more independant writers and have mostly mastered writing sentences with correct punctuation. The Year 2 students have focused on using ‘but’ to contrast and using adverbs in their writing. Year 1 students have practised using ‘and’ to connect adjectives. “The tower is tall and beautiful”. We are making progress each week in our writing and it is lovely to watch the students grow.

We had so much fun in IPC this week! We started our new unit ‘Time Travellers’ and began with an exciting entry point. The students realised that someone had been in their classroom over the weekend! We searched for clues that were around the school to see if we could find out who had messed up our classroom! The students were fantastic detectives and used the evidence to discover it was Ms.Temple that had messed up our tables and left belongings in our class. Hehe!

Thank you all for the beautiful pictures that you all sent in for our lesson. The children absolutely loved telling thier friends all about where they had been. It was such an engaging lesson and we learned that pictures can give us so much information.

    Next week Monday 11th November

On Monday in IPC we will be looking at personal belongings and I have asked the children to bring in 2 things that mean a lot to them. It could be a small toy, a bracelet, a picture, a drawing. Anything that they love and is special to them. Please send these in your child’s bag on Monday 🙂

    Field Trip Tuesday 12th November

On Tuesday, 12th November we have our field trip to Seonam Lake Park. At the Rainbow Park, we will have fun trampolining, making sand castles and climbing.

What do I need to bring?

    • An easy to eat snack

    • A lunch that doesn’t need to be microwaved

    • Comfortable shoes

    • Comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting a little sandy/dirty

    • A jacket (it is supposed to be 21 degrees but we don’t want to feel cold)

    • A happy smile 🙂

    Christmas Show 13th December

Christmas is soon approaching and we have started to look at which dance we will perform together as a class. Some of the students have asked for me to send the link to you so they can practise at home. This is the link here. Costumes have not yet been decided but I will discuss these with the students next week so we can start getting ready. Christmas is such a special time at school and I am excited for the lead up!

    Absent from School

I will be absent from school on Friday 15th November and 18th November and the class will be covered by Ms.Temple, Ms. Tanisha and Mr. Green.

We have a busy week ahead and I am sure that it will be full of fun and great learning! <3

    Have a great weekend,

    Kind regards

    Mrs. Sim

Mrs. Sim – Weekly Update Term 1 Week 10

    Hellooooooooo! Happy Halloween 🙂

What a great end to the week! The Halloween party was a great success and the children all had a fun time. The costumes were all amazing. They looked so good!

The excitement levels were definitely rising in the classroom as the party came closer! Let’s take a look at what we got up to this week 🙂

In Maths, we studied the following objectives. I am pleased with the progress the students are making, the growth mindset they so often show me  and their little faces filled with enthusiasm! <3

    Year 1

    2.12 – Subtraction – find a part
2.13 – Fact families – the eight facts
2.14 – Subtraction – take away/cross out (How many left?)

2.15 – Subtraction – take away (How many left?)

    Year 2

    2.5 – Add and subtract 1s
    2.6 – Add by making 10
    2.7 – Add three 1-digit numbers
    2.8 – Add to the next 10
    2.9 – Add across a 10

In Literacy, we have been exploring London through our character “Katie” in our new storybook “Katie in London”. Thank you to everyone who watched the little video, I could see the students had learned all the sights over the weekend and they were all eager to answer questions about them. I would love to take them all on a field trip to London hehe!

In lessons, we labelled the sights, wrote a postcard back to Katie and practised using adjectives to describe a picture of a busy street in London.

In IPC, we have come to the end of our unit “SuperHumans”. I would like to once again thank Nila (Naka’s mum) for a superb introduction to this unit. It was a fantastic unit and we have had a lot of fun learning about our amazing bodies, the senses and food groups. This week we looked at where our food comes from. We did a little sorting activity putting various foods into the correct categories. I gave the students a challenge to create a dish for a child their age. They had to include, carbohydrates, protein and vegetables. They did a great job of these and they turned out beautifully.

    No Homework this week

I hope you all have an amazing mid term break. I have to admit, I am looking forward to some rest, relaxation and lots of sleep! Hehe!

Take care, be safe and have fun 🥰

    Mrs. Sim

Mrs. Sim – Weekly Update Term 1 Week 9

    Dear Year 1/2 Parents,

I hope you are all well. It was nice to have a full week with no days off in between. The week has flown by!

At the beginning of the week I started the phonics assessments and I am pleased with the progress the students have made since starting in August. It is always lovely to see them improving.

There will be a few changes being made to the phonics groups to ensure the children are reading and learning at a level which is right for them. If your child’s colour of book changes next week, this is because they have tested at a higher level than what they were currently doing. If it stays the same, then that means they are right on track.

In Literacy, we finalised our storie and they are just wonderful! I showed them in assembly today as I was very proud of all the students and the effort they put in. We started a new book for our next unit “Katie in London” and have began exploring London. We watched a little video which you will see I have also assigned as homework. I would like the students to become familiar with the famous tourist attractions in London so they can relate to the story more once we begin. The Year 1 students will continue working on combining words to make sentences, ensuring that they use capital letters and full stops. In this unit they will also be practising to use ‘and’ in a sentence and learn all about plural noun suffixes -s and -es. Year 2 students will be focusing on using co-ordination (but,or) and adding ‘ly’ to turn adjectives into adverbs. They will also learn to use commas to separate items in a list. The unit will end with the children writing a non-chronilogical report about London using information from the text. It is a lovely little story and I am confident they will enjoy it.

In Maths this week, we have been very busy!

    Year 1

    2.8 – Addition – add together
    .2.9 – Addition – add more
    .2.10 – Addition problems
    .2.11 – Find a part
    2.12 – Subtraction – find a part

The year 1 students have been doing very well with addition and started learning about subtracting using the minus symbol today (-). It was a little stricky so we will be reviewing this again next week.

    Year 2

Aut.2.2 – Fact families – addition and subtraction bonds within 20
    Aut.2.3 – Related facts
    Aut.2.4 – Bonds to 100 (tens)
    Aut.2.5 – Add and subtract 1s

Year 2 did very well this week working on fact families again. We looked at bonds to 100 by learning that if 2+8=10 then 20+80=100. The homework will review this as some students found it a little tricky.

In IPC, we finished our jelly beans experiment on Monday and wrote up our results. Some students were a little sad that they didn’t guess the correct taste. It was so much fun overall and the children learned that when we use our sight, smell and taste buds we can more accurately guess the flavours. On Tuesday, we moved on to looking at herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. We did a sorting activity to see which animals belonged in each of the groups. On Wednesday and Thursday we took a look at the different food groups and spent time in groups sorting various foods into their groups. We made fantastic posters on the benefits of Calcium, Protein and carbohydrates. It was a very team based activity and I was pleased to see the students working nicely together.

    Star of the Week

I would like to give you more information on the “Star of the week” and how it runs in my classroom. I do not choose the student for the star of the week myself. Each student has a lollipop stick with their name on it and I choose a stick randomly with my eyes closed. I allow the children to go around the circle and tell me something they would like to write about the chosen child. My reason for doing it like this is that I believe that all children are stars of the week in their own way <3 I do not want any child to feel like they are not being recognised for their effort each week. I tell the students that they are all stars and encourage them to try and not get upset if their stick isn’t drawn. However, each time we draw a name it causes some upset.  I totally understand them and try to explain that everyone will get a turn. It is a compulsory part of the assembly so please understand and do not believe that your child isn’t doing well because they haven’t yet received it. It’s not a measure of how well they are doing in class. Their turn will come but it may be a little while as they get chosen every 2 weeks and there are 13 children to go around. I just wanted to make you all aware and know that I give them lots of compliments and encouragement as a whole class 🙂

    Phonics Books and Homework

Just a gentle reminder that homework, library books and Phonics books should be returned together in the Yellow Folder each week. If possible, it would be great to return them all together each Friday. This allows for myself and Ms. Kim to swap over the homework all together, check that the Phonics books have been returned and put the new homework in.

We have one week before the midterm break now and I can’t believe that we are more than half way through the first term. I am currently researching where we can go for our first field trip together and will let you all now when arrangements are made.

I hope you all have a great weekend. There has been a  lot of coughing and sickness in our class this week. If your child has a cough please may I ask that they take a mask with them. I hope everyone feels better and look forward to seeing their smiling/tired faces on Monday.

    Warm regards,

    Mrs. Sim

Mrs. Sim – Weekly Update Term 1 Week 8

    Hello and Happy Friyay!

I hope you are all well and enjoying the Autumn weather. We have had a very exciting week in Year 1/2!

In Maths, we are enjoying our new unit “Addition and Subtraction” and have been using a lot of manipulatives to help us learn. The tuff trays are always made to reinforce the objective they have learned with me first. The children enjoy the hands on activities and have had fun this week using counters and rainbows to help them.🙂

We worked on the following objectives:

    Year 1

    2.4 – Fact families – addition facts
    2.5 – Number bonds within 10
    2.6 – Systematic number bonds within 10
    .2.7 – Number bonds to 10

    Year 2

On Monday the Year 2 students sat their end of unit test on Place Value and I was very happy and proud with all of their results. Well done!

Fact Families can be a little tricky at first so we will be reviewing this objective again next week.

    Assessment
    2.1 – Bonds to 10
2.2 – Fact families – addition and subtraction bonds within 20

In Literacy, the students have been blowing me away this week with their effort. We are now working on writing our own stories using the characters we created. We made a plan to sequence the events in the story and thought about how we can replace the penguin from our class story with our own character and replace the “Freddie” the main character with ourselves. The students were given a little book to try and create their own sentences to go along with new pictures they had drawn. As formative assessment I asked the children to complete this piece of work independently. This allowed me to see if they are meeting the objectives from the unit.

Year 1’s objectives focus on using Capital Letters, Full stops and finger spaces. Along with using their “Freddie Fingers” to help them spell. Year 2’s objectives are the same along with using expanded noun phrases, connectives and correct punctuation. I was most impressed with the work they produced and we will continue to work on them next week. I can’t wait to see the final masterpieces!

In IPC this week we have been little scientists carrying out experiments! Lots of fun! On Monday, we put our sense of smell to the test by having little secret cups with various foods inside. Coffee seemed to be the easiest one for the children to recognise. Perhaps mum and dad like coffee 😁 We used a table to record our guess before revealing what was inside.

We also learned about the nerves in our hands and made some beautiful art pieces to show where the nerves were located.

On Thursday we took a look at which animals have the best sense of smell! Polar bears won with elephants coming in a close second! The children had fun making little posters with pictures of the animals and writing the distance at which they can smell from.

To top off the week, we carried out  a tasting experiment today and the children were soooo excited for this one. They asked me about 10 times when it was time for “Jelly Beans”. Haha! We blindfolded the students and tested to see if they knew which flavour each was. As little scientists, we must record our work so the children gathered their answers on a table. Next week we will talk about why some of the tastes were unrecognizable.

I am working on teamwork with the students in P.E and encouraging the children to think of P.E. as a fun activity that we do together. There is a lot of sadness when children aren’t winning or when they are tagged. We spent time today discussing that the games we play are not at all about winning but rather they teach us new skills and help us work together 🥰

    PHONICS

Next week I will be carrying out phonics tests with the students. This allows me to ensure that every child is in the appropriate group for their level.

Please enjoy the pictures from this week.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs. Sim – Weekly Update Term 1 Week 7

    Dear Parents,

It has been a funny little week with having Tuesday and Thursday off this week but we still had lots of fun learning. I am also loving the cooler weather! Let’s have a look at what we have got up to this week 🙂

In Maths, we covered the following objectives:

    Year 1

    2.2- Part-whole model
    2.3 – Write number sentences

Year 1 started their new unit “Addition and Subraction”. This week we looked at how 2 parts are equal to a whole. We used the Part-whole model to help us create number sentences.

    Year 2

    1.15 – Count in 2s, 5s and 10s
    1.16 – Count in 3s

Year 2 students practised counting in 2s,5s and 10s. Counting forward was okay but counting backwards was a lot more difficult. We also practised counting forward and backwards in 3s and this was very challenging for most of the children. The homework is related to these objectives and it would be great if you could practise with your child. Especially counting back in 3’s. 👍

In Literacy, we have began planning for our very own stories. We created a new character for our story, drew a picture of it and made a little fact file. The Year 1 students did well writing adjectives to describe their animals independently while the Year 2 students used the internet to research more about their chosen animal. We looked at what makes a good story and decided that fun characters are a must (Along with sequenced sentences, a beginning, middle and end and colourful pictures ;)). Next week we will be looking at how we can change the “Lost and Found” story by changing the penguin to our own character. The unit will finish with the children attempting to create their own story independently. 🙂

In IPC, we learned how our ears and brain work together to allow us to hear. We enjoyed listening to a variety of instruments and I showed off my harmonica playing skills to the students. Hehe! We looked at how we need to hit some instruments and blow into others. Today we finished of having lots of fun looking at how our hands feel things. We went on a little walk and tested to see which part of our body is the most sensitive to touch. We tested by touching with our hands, fingers, elbow and feet (for some).

    Phonics Books

Thank you to everyone who returned the phonics books. It is much appreciated. I am still missing a few so please do return them as soon as possible as other groups also use them. Thanking you in advance.

I hope you all have a great weekend and I shall see you all on Monday 🙂
