Ms. Temple’s Weekly Update – Term 1, Week 1

Hello everyone,

This was our first week back and what a fun week it was! The students have smoothly transitioned into their new routines, and I’m very impressed how quickly our classroom culture has blossomed into such a positive and supportive learning environment.

Here is what Year 5/6 have been up to this week:

Maths Year 5 – Place Value

1.1 Roman numerals to 1000

1.2 Numbers to 10,000

1.3 Numbers to 100,000

Maths Year 6 – Place Value

1.1 Numbers to 1,000,000

1.2 Numbers to 10,000,000

1.3 Read and write numbers to 10,000,000

Literacy

We began the week with some creative writing activities, which allowed me to gain valuable insight into your children’s unique writing styles and identify areas where they may benefit from additional support. It has been a pleasure reading their work, and I’m excited to see how their talents will develop over the course of the year. We also started our brand new literacy programme “Pathways to Write”. Our Focus text for the first 8 weeks will be “Queen of the Falls” by Chris Van Allsburg.

Session 1: The students explored the concept of a daredevil and crafted Instagram posts for the main protagonist of our focus text. They were fascinated to learn that not only did she courageously jump off Niagara Falls in a barrel, but even more astonishingly, that this incredible feat is based on a true story!

IPC

We have started this year’s first unit all about Metacognition. This will help the students to know more about their brains and different learning techniques, which will help them in the coming year.

Entry Point: QR treasure hunt which saw the students using different skills associated with metacognition.

Knowledge Harvest: Sticky note challenge where the students had to explore their thoughts and ideas about metacognition and work collaboratively.

Health and Wellbeing Task 1: Self reflection task. “What are my academic strengths and weaknesses?” “Are there any strategies I can use to improve my weaknesses?”

Health and Wellbeing Task 2: The power of yet. The students started creating inspirational posters with the song lyrics from CJ. Luckey’s song “The Power of Yet”. These will be displayed outside our classroom to inspire the whole school.

Extra Information

In our assembly this week, there was mention of a Cultural Exchange programme and a football/soccer programme, which our class have been invited to join. There will be more information in the upcoming weekly newsletter, so please look out for that if your child has expressed interest.

The sign up sheet for clubs will be sent out this weekend, also. Please look out for this and sign up for your child’s club by Wednesday the 28th of August. Please only sign up if your child is genuinely interested in attending the club.

A quick reminder, this coming Thursday (29th) will be the Year 5/6 curriculum information meeting in my classroom at 2:30 p.m. This will be an opportunity for you to meet me, if you haven’t previously, and to gain some useful information about the upcoming academic year. I look forward to seeing you there! 🙂

Have a fantastic weekend,

Ms. Temple
